Laser Gallbladder Stone Removal: Myth vs. Reality

By Dr. Daipayan Ghosh (Senior Consultant Surgeon)

In my 16+ years of surgical practice in Gurgaon, one of the most frequent questions I hear in my OPD is: "Doctor, can you remove my gallbladder stones using a Laser?"

It is a common request, but there is a major medical distinction that every patient needs to understand before choosing their treatment.

The Big Myth: "Laser Gallstone Surgery"

Currently, there is no such thing as "Laser surgery" to remove the gallbladder or its stones. While Lasers are revolutionary for treating Piles, Fistulas, and even Kidney stones (where the stone is broken into dust), they are not used to remove the gallbladder. If a laser were used to "blast" a gallstone, the fragments would escape into the bile duct, causing severe jaundice or life-threatening pancreatitis.

The Reality: Laparoscopic "Keyhole" Surgery

The gold standard—and the safest method used at SCALPEL M—is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

Patients often confuse "Laparoscopy" with "Laser" because both involve tiny incisions and advanced technology. Here is how it actually works:

  1. Tiny Incisions: We make 3 or 4 small holes (5mm to 10mm) instead of a large cut.

  2. The Camera: A high-definition camera (Laparoscope) allows me to see your internal organs in 4K resolution.

  3. Complete Removal: We remove the entire gallbladder along with the stones. This is the only way to ensure the stones never come back.

Why Laparoscopy is Better than any "Laser" Concept

  • No Recurrence: By removing the gallbladder, we remove the "stone-making factory."

  • Safety: It avoids the danger of stone fragments blocking your bile ducts.

  • Rapid Recovery: Most of our patients at our Sector 84, Sector 8, and Sector 43 clinics are back on their feet within 24 hours.

  • Cosmetic Result: The tiny scars fade so well they become almost invisible over time.

When IS Laser Used?

At SCALPEL M, we do use advanced Laser technology, but specifically for:

  • Anal Fistulas & Fissures

  • Piles (Haemorrhoids)

  • Varicose Veins

In these cases, Laser is highly effective. However, for your Gallbladder, Laparoscopy remains the unmatched king of safety and precision.
